About Fulbourn
The name of Fulbourn is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word Fugolburna'. meaning 'A stream frequented by birds'. It is situated 4 miles E.S.E. of Cambridge City centre.
Most of the modem village has expanded westwards towards Cambridge since the 1960's and many open areas within the village envelope have been infilled with new estates and cul-de-sacs and currently has a population of around 4,000.
The village High Street is reputed to be one of the shortest in the county, but does have a reasonable selection of shops including a Co-op supermarket, a butcher selling own-flock and local produce, a greengrocer selling own produce and from New Covent Garden market, a chemist, flower shop, post office, antique shop, art gallery, used-car dealer, cappuccino bar, hairdressers and beauty salon, Chinese take-away and a kebab shop. There is also a Tesco superstore within the parish close to the Fulbourn hospital site. The village also has a library. The library was re-opened by volunteers in November 2003 after having been closed by the County Council in October 2003.
There were once fifteen public houses in Fulbourn but now only three survive of which The Six Bells is the oldest housed in a building that dates from the 1400s.
There are two churches in Fulbourn. St Vigor’s and the United Reform Church.  The Fulbourn Primary School, close to the village centre, has about 270 on roll and has recently had a very successful Ofsted inspection. Secondary schooling for most children is at the Village College in Bottisham five miles (8 km) to the North, though some parents choose to send their children to schools in Cambridge. There is a retirement home, Home Close, a Health Centre and also a chiropodist in the village. Addenbrookes Hospital is about three miles away.
Other social meeting places include the new Fulbourn Centre at Home End where there is a sports and social club, Twelve, the Church centre in the High Street and a new community centre which is being re-built to replace the old one in Haggis Gap. This will house the village library and provide meeting rooms for many of the village societies. Village clubs and societies include: tennis, badminton, football, cricket, green bowling, keep fit, Pilates, gardening, history, scouts, cubs, guides, youth club, drama and artists studios.    The recreation ground has a skateboard park, tennis courts and a multi-use games area. The village also boasts a golf driving range, a farm shop and a nature reserve.
High on the hill overlooking Fulbourn is Fulbourn Windmill which is a smock mill, built in 1808, when it ceased working in 1937 it was left to decay and local people formed the Fulbourn Windmill Society to start a restoration programme.
Fulbourn is well placed for access to the M11: is about 4 miles from Cambridge railway station with good services to London, Ely, Kings Lyn and Peterborough etc. The old town of Bury St Edmunds with its Abbey, the racing town of Newmarket with the famous July Racecourse and the National Horseracing Museum, Anglesey Abbey and Lode Mill, Wimplole Hall House and Farm and Audley End House are all within a 20 minute drive and the famous Gog Magog Golf Course is 5 minutes away by car. There is a local shoppers’ bus and regular bus services to Cambridge, Newmarket, Balsham, Linton and Haverhill.
Fulbourn is a thriving village with a wonderful community spirit. A splendid place to live.
